What is EFT / Tapping?

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques – a collection of techniques often referred to as ‘tapping’. It is used to treat anxiety, depression, phobias, trauma and everyday stress by addressing the underlying causes.

EFT an evidence-based therapy developed by Gary Craig in the 1990’s that blends mindfulness, traditional talk therapy (talking about your problems) and stimulating acupressure points on the body to help release emotions and change negative thought patterns.

It works by using your fingers to gently tap on particular points on your own face and body while you talk about your issue and say certain calming phrases. Scientific studies have proven that EFT settles the nervous system by reducing stress hormones such as cortisol. Once you feel calm, you can then safely let go of challenging emotions and retrain your mind. This allows you to feel more peaceful, confident and capable.

How does EFT / Tapping work?

Every human being has a fight / flight response. This is a survival mechanism designed to switch on when we’re in immediate physical danger. All the body’s resources rally to give us the energy to stay and fight or to escape this danger. Once we’re safe, the response switches off and we can relax and turn our attention to other things. Unfortunately, sometimes, the switch remains in the ‘on’ position and our nervous system remains in a hyper-alert state. The body isn’t designed to remain in this state for long periods of time. When it does, the body tires and the more exhausted, anxious and depressed we become.

EFT Tapping enables the body to switch off the flight / flight response so that it only switches on when genuinely needed (such as during a genuinely life threatening event). By tapping on certain acupressure points on the body, calming chemicals are released. This serves to reassure us at a physical, mental and emotional level that we are safe. We can then freely let go of negative thoughts and emotions in order to feel more calm, confident, capable and joyful.

What issues does EFT work on?

EFT is effective at addressing most conditions whether that be stress, troubling memories, low self-worth, bad habits, feeling stuck and even physical pain. To get the best results, I encourage you to come with an open mind and tap in between sessions. Like exercise, the calming effect builds with repetition.

What can I expect during a session?

During your initial 75-minute appointment, we will discuss the issue(s) you’d like help with then we’ll develop a plan together to help you achieve your goals. The overarching aim is to equip you with tools to help you address the underlying causes of your stress so you can find long-lasting clarity, peace and confidence.

I’ll teach you how to use basic evidence-based EFT tapping to help you let go of troubling thoughts and emotions. These techniques can be used at home to clear anxiety. However, for deeper work and long-lasting results, it is generally recommended that clients come for several sessions.

At the end of your initial session, you can decide if you’d like to book in future individual sessions or a package of 3 or 6 sessions. During subsequent appointments, we’ll explore your issue in more depth, employing a variety of counselling and tapping techniques to further help you clear stress and anxiety so you can feel freer.

How do I know if EFT is for me?

Everyone is different so each person will be drawn to particular types of therapy. Why not book a free 20-minute discovery call with me to see if it’s a good fit for you?

Is EFT the only type of therapy you offer?

I use a variety of counselling therapies including EFT. My focus is on you and what works best in your situation so I will tailor the session to meet your needs.

How will I know where to tap?

As your practitioner, I will lead you through the process by tapping on myself while you mirror what I’m doing by tapping on your own body. I’ll also tailor some phrases that would work best for your situation.

How do I know if I should book in 60-minute or 90-minute sessions in future?

We can discuss that during your initial appointment. Some people prefer 90 minutes as it gives them more breathing space to share their story. Others find 60 minutes is sufficient.

How long will it take to feel better?

You will usually feel immediate relief within a few rounds of tapping – calmer, more centred, and less reactive to triggers. However, clearing an issue usually takes several sessions. If you have long standing negative thought patterns or you’re dealing with a complex situation, it may take longer. We can discuss this in more depth and negotiate a treatment plan that works for you.
